Everyday Hero: Tanate Piriyothinkul

About Oneself

  • Introduce yourself.

Tanate Piriyothinkul (Oui), Member of the Board of Directors/ Executive Director/ Chief Officer of Commerce, Business Development and Investment/ Managing Director of Overseas Business and Investment

  • Please tell us your role and responsibility.

My main role and responsibility include defining business strategy and plan; managing sales and marketing as well as developing new businesses; planning for business extension and investment domestically and internationally; operating overseas business and investment and developing potentials for executive teams and talents in respective departments.

  • Tell us your work experience with JWD. How has the Company changed from your perspective?

I have been working with the Company for 8 years and 5 months so far. Before starting the work with JWD, I had a conversation with Khun Charvanin that my dream and passion were to change JWD businesses to multinational Logistics and Supply Chain at regional and world levels – equipped with competitive capacity equivalent to that of overseas multinational corporates. We traveled from the point that the Company had not yet entered the Stock Exchange of Thailand, it was when our growth was still limited in terms of business strategy and plan, business model, business size, the number of human resource capacity, the industry with growth potential and so on. Up to the present, JWD Group has passed through different changes with consistent adjustment, making it the business and the company with sharp growth strategies, business models and targeted industries, potential in logistics and supply chain both domestically and internationally, robust partners, larger in size and growing, including executives and employees with the capacity and potential to grow with the businesses. All these changes are my dream I have been wishing all through these working years. I also believe that JWD will continue to grow and change to become the sustainable company in the future.

  • Describe yourself in 3 words.

Passion, determination and people

I believe that many employees in the organization who have opportunities to work closely with me will clearly understand these 3 words which have been my working principles for all through 28 years. These 3 words are not just my working principles, but also the working principles that I have been attempting to transfer to executive teams and every employee as best as I can. This is because I believe that these 3 will make us work happily – knowing the work’s value and the work’s goal. Besides, we will have high opportunities to be successful and equipped with working teams with potential across generations in the long term.

  • In your opinion, what is ‘Hero’? What kind of Hero’s characteristics that you wish to have so that you can find solutions for your work?

‘Hero’, in terms of work and business from my perspective, is an example of a    person that is capable of creating businesses and people with potentials simultaneously by giving importance to these 2 factors appropriately – to build the teamwork and human resource with potential in growing businesses down through generations, without sticking to working by particular people.              That is, the organization is therefore able to continue running its businesses with different people operating it. There will be new generations to manage its businesses in the future.

About Work

  • Please give an example of your pride in your work experience.

Overall, there are 2 actions that I’m proud of.

The first one is that I have adjusted and thus contributed to JWD businesses that has grown in leaps according to the business strategy and plan — in terms of revenue or profit, including the number or the quantity of business JWD possesses – both conventional and promising businesses.

The second one which always comes together with success is the growth of executives and employees in the organization, both in my respective departments and in others. Every time I see my subordinates or team members are promoted or have acquired more responsibilities, I am delighted and proud that I have opportunities to have worked with those people and have played a part in their potential and capability development so that they can grow at work in the future.

  • What are challenges or hindrances that you see at work?

The most challenging task for me working with JWD Group is the drafting of the policy and the driving of the business transformation for the business in the course of time. What is challenging is how to convince the organization’s executives to realize and have the vision to see changes that may occur of the future. For example, the realization that we must be brave to be out of our comfort zone and step into new challenges that could be both opportunities and risks regarding businesses, the persuasion to change from working in solo to cross-functional/ cross-collaborative working style by weighing the importance to the organization more than one’s own work, the development of the organization’s executives to be ‘effective leaders’ in leading and developing teams to be competent at work continuously.

At present, JWD Group is a large company, compared with itself 8 years ago. However, being a large company is a double-edged sword which is also challenging for the organization, especially working together on the overall business benefit over one particular person or company. The larger the company, the more challenging the collaboration the organization encounters. Therefore, the executive teams and employees should pay attention to this –  for our company to be a large business that grows rapidly and with unity in the future.

  • What is your approach to winning obstacles or finding solutions?

Never before that, I think that the work has any obstacles or problems. I see it as a ‘challenge’. Viewing it this way I am excited and determined to win these challenges even more! If we look at it that it is an obstacle or a problem, we may not possess enough mental power or drive to win it. I always believe that ‘Nothing is impossible.’. Hence, every challenge always has its solution.

  • What is your work motto?

My work motto is “Success is something we can be delighted with just one day.”. This is the motto that reminds me that we should not be careless and we should not be into our success. This is because when we are delighted with our success stories in the past, we may not have any development, new viewpoint or new attempt that is distinct. This is to strike a chord that past success is not the confirmation for accomplishment in the future. Don’t stick to it. Don’t remind yourselves of it. We must continue changing and developing ourselves always.

  • What is your work goal? And what is your personal goal?

I am fortunate to have started working when I was 19. This made me find myself

sooner than many people. I knew what my passion was, what job I liked and what business I would like to do. This led to the drafting of the goal when I graduated and started working that I would like to be successful in both running my own businesses and being a professional executive in the businesses that I love and like. In the past 28 working years, I have tried to balance the work of both sides – that each is productive to its optimum level. Meanwhile, my personal goal has been regularly adjusted since I graduated and started working – depending on the status at each stage of life. At present, my personal goal at the zenith is that I have freedom in traveling to places as I wish. That means I may have to leave the work and the responsibilities that come with it quickly, to be able to follow my dream and personal goal.

  • Where is your favorite corner at the Company? And why?

As I have to travel quite a lot, both domestically and internationally, the time I spent at the Company may be limited. Thinking of my favorite spots at the Company, it is ‘my respective office’, which is the place I spent my time quietly contemplating both work and personal matters. It is also the corner I briefly take a break from work when opportunity allows.

About the Company

  • How is JWD in your perspective?

From my point of view, JWD is considered a business with high potential to grow, according to these key factors:

  • We are in the business with the trend to change and grow in the future.
  • We have sharp strategic and business plans.
  • Our leaders have vision and deep comprehension in the businesses.
  • Our executive teams are highly experienced.
  • Our infrastructure is terrific with potential.
  • We have initiatives and state-of-the-art technologies with regard to businesses’ needs in the future.
  • We have the credibility in our stakeholders’ view.

These are JWD’s business strength today which are satisfying for everyone having an opportunity to work with this organization.

  • Describe JWD in 3 words.

Energetic, aggressive and innovative.

Although we have been in this business for over 40 years, we are still young, compared with other big players at the world level. We are the new generation equipped with energy to work and drive new actions – having fun in the competition with no limit. We also have interesting initiatives that may lead to different changes in the future.

  • What do you like best about JWD? And why?

Our company does not shut opportunities for capable employees with potential. The Company offers opportunities and stages for every employee to show their potentials and capabilities, which is great and doesn’t exist in every organization. The growth of the businesses allows executives and employees to acquire more responsibilities, to work in new businesses in new surroundings that are different from those they have experienced as well as to cross borders to work overseas. These are opportunities for every JWD employee that the organization has offered. I believe there will be more chances like these in the course of time.

  • What is the action you would like the Company to adjust? And why?

There is one thing that I think it’s still not quite clear or the company may not have yet tried it. That is ‘the job rotation’ of executives at different levels. We have had executives working consistently at the same departments of the same companies for over 10 years without rotating to other functions or to other companies. This could result in possible drawbacks in terms of executive potential in the future. We may have executives with experience yet with limited diversity, which could result in probable hindrances regarding visions, business perspectives, cross-functional working that requires the dismantling of silo working style. I believe that having experienced executives with diversity will enhance the Company’s potential, and that both executives and employees will have more opportunities to grow in the organization.

  • Leave your message to fellow JWD employees.

I wish all JWD employees the inspiration and the mental power to work and do their’ best for their responsibilities. I wish everyone success according to your determination. Most importantly, I wish everyone happiness and enjoy the work with JWD always.

  • Leave your message to the CEO and the executive directors.

I wish Khun Charvanin and the executive directors to be successful in driving our growing businesses with growth according to our long-term plan. I also wish everyone good health, strength and mental power to pass different challenges that may happen in the future.
